I have the privilege of participating in an art class under the direction of volunteer staff and Tony Brown the co-owner of Vision Loss Connections. People from all walks of life and all ages who are experiencing a variety of vision issues come every third Thursday to the Seattle University district and learn how to use a variety of media. Volunteer staff graciously impart the knowledge and techniques to each person. We have created an environment that encourages everyone to expand and continue to discover the joy of creating art.
For me personally my first time creating art occurred during community collage while taking an art appreciation class. My first memorable piece was creating a black and white piece using a variety lines and shading. There was another piece I did using color pencils, and drawing pens. Using a picture from an old calendar, I copied the picture onto the drawing paper. One of the challenges of coloring was staying inside the lines and not allowing the white of the paper to show through. I have always colored that way. One day one of the volunteer staff from the art class here in Seattle showed me how to color and shade. I was able to stand close. He used a darker pencil and bigger line to show his techniques. As a result my coloring and shading have improved.
Vision Loss connections was Founded by Pat Copland, the wife of Tony Brown several years ago in Seattle Washington. They help to educate and provide experience that people with low vision or vision loss would not otherwise be able do partake in the community without the help of contributors and volunteers. With the help of vision Loss connections, I believe I have found an important voice in today’s society. I have gained a sense of purpose and stronger faith. I am thankful for their effort.
In the midst of participating tin this art class, One New Man Ministry host a Monday night Meeting called "The Lamad Institute". Pastor David Mitts encouraged participants to Seek the The LORD about doing things that we enjoy doing. Or it could be something that we are suppose to be doing and have not made the time to pursue hearing from The Holy Spirit about the project. For me personally, one of the projects that i have always wanted to do is drawing. There were no sets of goals. I started out buying a small sketch book form the art store in which our art class was held. The excitement grew as I saw the response to the drawings that were presented to my friend and volunteer staff in the class. They encouraged my by giving me ideas which were applied.
I believe it was late summer or early fall that the Vision Loss Connections announced that they were going to have an art show. The excitement grew for participants. Although, for me personally it really did not matter, because, I was simply displaying my art. And well... it really was not all that great to be displayed. That mood changed however, when I shared the event about an up coming art show to my fellowship and Pastor David. I realized this is just the beginning. This is a journey of one choice to do what The Holy Spirit has been impressing me to do all along. This is series of art of from when I started to just three night before the art show.
